 Architectural Analysis
By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.
Once a grand house on the outskirts of San Antonio in the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood; this 1911 Neoclassical home is in need of some tender loving care. It could be the perfect house for an architect or a couple who would love to restore the elegance and rich details of an historical house. Just recently, this house suffered from a fire on the upper front porch, whose structure was already sagging from a shift in the soil. Do note that the structure of the house is in fine, stable condition.
1002 Magnolia has a Victorian floor plan with a two-story corner wrap-around porch and adjacent enclosed sleeping porches. It is a typical Four-Square plan with the entry vestibule, kitchen, living and dining rooms each occupying one of the four corner of the house. On the second floor, these spaces are replicated by four bedrooms.
Victorian design, still very popular at the turn of the century, meant one could expect a large entry vestibule with an elegant staircase, high ceilings, wood boiserie wainscots, sculpturally-carved ceiling, door and window moldings and wallpaper. In fact, some of the original floral-patterned wallpaper was found attached to the wall boards upstairs, when the sheetrock was removed.
A traditional cast iron gaslight fixture still hang from the vestibule ceiling, now with modern electrical connections. Transom windows were designed above all the doors throughout the house to open at an angle and allow the air to circulate, without having to open the doors.
The plan may be Victorian, however the exterior style of the house is clearly Neoclassical Revival. Two prominent gables extend boldly over the curved walls of the enclosed sleeping porches and form classical pediments. Carved wood brackets, imitating stone corbels that would have been used by the Greeks, dress the underside of the eaves.
At the front door, slim fluted Ionic columns flank each side of the entry with the bottom third left bare (a detail I have seen in Early French Renaissance buildings). Doric columns dress the ground floor porch, although the capitals are now missing.
Following the correct rules of classicism, the upper porch columns are in the Ionic order, and the massive columns that support the sleeping porches to the north and east sides are also Ionic but adorned with fluting. The feature that most clearly distinguishes Neoclassical design from the earlier Greek Revival is large-scale two story columned entrance facades.
John and Alice Jackson built the house in 1911 and lived there for eight years. There is still quite a bit of evidence of Alice's taste in the home and her preference for classical details. The entry vestibule opens directly into the living room through a broad opening and the classical, rectangular panels of the wainscot extend, like a bar into this opening. (Presently, this detail has been filled in by a contemporary wall.) This opening was centered on the living room fireplace, whose wood adorn has recently been stained dark cherry by the present owner.
The living room opens directly to the dining room through another broad opening, which can be closed off by large paneled sliding pocket doors. The rectangular panel wainscot pattern and the classical molding of the doors and windows is mirrored in the glass-panel doors and ornamental frame of the built-in china cabinet. The fireplace surround and mantle in the dining room is constructed of... [Follow link to continue reading with illustrated Architectural History of Neoclassic Beacon Hill 6-3]

Greetings!
Artists rendition after rehab
1002, Magnolia Avenue
The home at 1002 W. Magnolia is the iconic home in Beacon Hill that has its upper porch supported by 2x4's while awaiting some serious love.
Unfortunately, the current owner is not in a position to provide it after a fire dashed his plans last year.  Given the architectural significance of this property, the neighborhood, the owner, the San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation and the SA Conservation Society are all pulling together to help find a new steward for this home that has been designated "Historic Significant".
Although the interior and structure are surprisingly intact, this property will take some significant rehabbing estimated from $150,000 and up.  If you know someone who is interested in this sort of project, please pass this on to them.
Any reasonable proposal will be considered, but please understand that a project of this nature won't qualify for a normal mortgage and will have to proceed in a manner appropriate to a home designated a historic landmark. There are two apartments in back that may be useful during the rehab.
If this is the sort of property that interests you, then I invite you to read the Illustrated Architectural History of this Neoclassical as well as view additional photos online.

Greetings!
8611 datapoint Dr. #58I am thoroughly amazed by how awesome this condo is... The current and previous owner went WAY beyond the call of duty in updating this really sweet condo in North Pointe near the Med Center. Laminate flooring, expensive lighting, really neato bathroom and kitchen fixtures (check the photos), and on and on...

As usual, since i appreciate my subscribers, I roll my new listings past you before I put it on MLS or put up the sign. Maybe you know someone who will working or studying at UT Health Science Center or in the Med Center, who would want to take a peek at this shwank pad.

I hope you enjoy the photos and Taggart & Erin's fond memories. Please feel free to forward this on to someone who might want to hear about the coolest condo in the area...

Some Wonderful Memories

Family Room Family Room
Living Room and Balcony

The current owners, Erin and Taggart, love their home, but are moving to Houston. I always ask my clients for their favorite memories, but I wasn't prepared for such a great list!

  • It's quick launch to UH/Methodist Hospital, Downtown, Fiesta Texas, Woodlawn Lake, Ingram Park Mall, La Cantera Mall, Brackenridge Park, San Antonio Zoo, Airport, Hill Country (Wimberley/Canyon Lake), and HemisFair Park/Alamo
  • Really love having Sushi Zushi with in a two-minute drive. The food is always fresh and consistently delicious. Service is wonderful and it is a family friendly place that doesn't break the bank. Rainbow roll with a side of unagi is a favorite.
  • Lorenzos is literally right down the street and is a wonderful little Italian spot. They have a short wine list with a few Texas wines which is always fun. Its not pricey, or flashy, but just a comfortable little establishment that delivers big on taste and hearty Italian flavors. Our waiter, Sy always takes care of us and treats us like family. Baked ziti, Garlic pasta and homemade lasagna are favorites.
  • Datapoint is a great spot to access the rest of San Antonio. Set just far enough of I-10 not to feel like its in your back yard, yet you can be on it inside of a few minutes. From our street you can be in downtown in ten minutes, the zoo in 15 minutes, or La Cantera Mall in 15 minutes. You also have very close access to the University Hospital and Methodist Hospitals, which are right down the street.
  • Proximity to work/school at University Hospital and the medical school attached to it. By bike, I make it there in 10 minutes. Being so close makes it easy to come home for lunch during the day or be home in minutes to begin relaxing after a long day in the hospital. Close to several great restaurants, a movie theater, a bookstore, and a couple of great dive bars keeps every day or night active with different spots to visit, all within a short drive.
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio medical/dental school is just 1.5 miles down the road. It is great to have such close access that I can easily walk or ride a bike. There is a park at the school complete with a 5 mile running track! Our condo is 15 minutes from Brackenridge Park and San Antonio Zoo. There is even a train that runs through the park for the kids. OP Schnabel Park is 15 minutes south west of our location. This is a great place for biking and hiking.
  • Walking with my son down to a coffee spot on the weekend. It a nice ten minute or so stroll down the road on Datapoint with sidewalks that make it kid friendly.
  • Having friends come to stay in San Antonio with us. Taking them out and showing them all San Antonio has to offer in downtown and all around. People are always amazed (especially our friends from Houston) at how close we are to everything in town.
  • Big clubhouse with pool/spa that is great for parties. Celebrated our son's first birthday there with about 30 friends and family. We had a huge BBQ and lots of fun.
  • Lounging around in the big living room on Sundays watching football. The tall ceilings make the room feel huge and it makes for a great space to watch the big game.
  • Taking walks through the property along the paths that weave in and out of the buildings. There are grass "nooks" that are scattered along the way where my son and I would play.
  • Over the winter, we have a nice warm fire to curl up to in the living room. It's a wood burning fireplace so it has the authentic feel that you only get with a wood fire.
  • Drinking wine on the back porch together. Over a nice red, we would relax on the porch, which faces a grotto area and is fairly private.
  • Cooking dinners together in the kitchen is always a favorite time. The open kitchen allows for everyone to be involved in both the cooking and the conversation.
  • After we had moved in and settled a bit, we invited our parents and siblings to all come and enjoy a dinner together. It was the first time we "hosted" the family in our own home and was very special.
  • We got to know our neighbors beneath us very well. Dave, who was a dental student, and his father Dave Sr. became trusted friends.
  • Our son was born while we lived in this condo. I remember the first day we brought him home. We had made one room into his nursery and loved it as he grew and discovered his environment.
  • During the "ice storm" that hit San Antonio a few years back, we made a nice fire and barricaded ourselves in the house for the day. Since school and work were all cancelled we had all day to relax and play.
  • Sitting out on the porch in the fantastic cool weather before that Texas heat sets in for the summer. The trees are green and the grotto behind the house is alive and vibrant.
  • Swimming in the pool! We began to teach our son how to swim there and spent many afternoons in the clear blue water as a family. We had some BBQ's out there and spent time with neighbors and friends alike.
  • Fall brings with it the football season. On Sundays we would set up for the big games with lots of homemade hotwings and cold drinks. Our friends would come over and we would spend the afternoon cheering, or pouting.
