Battered Piers resting on Brick Podiums

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.. and hoping you might give them a little treat, if you buy this classic Craftsman Bungalow on 614, East Park Street in Tobin Hill.

If you see a posse of chickens running loose in this neighborhood, just remember, the neighbors consider them to be adopted pets. Friendly, local charm characterizes both this neighborhood and our historic bungalow.

The house's most eye-catching features are the gabled roofs that emerge from the roofline and fold downward, like a folded sheet in origami, and the five battered wood piers that line the porch and porte cochère. The battered piers, which rest on brick podiums, uphold the long horizontal beams of the roof. These beams, spanning over twenty feet per member, are one of the remarkable characteristics of a house built in 1922.

Most houses in San Antonio were built with dense hardwoods and balloon frame construction, up until the Depression. Old growth trees provided solid, insect-resistant beams and columns for the construction of our historic neighborhoods; a kind of wood that cannot be purchased today.

Around the side of the house you can see the original stepped-brick fireplace, which has been recently renovated inside. A detached "auto barn" (garage) and servant's quarters are in the back, a modernizing feature for the time. There is also a limestone well in the backyard that may pre-date the construction of this house.

Stepping inside the house, one is greeted by many scenes of "local character". The original molded baseboards, doors and window frames, and ceiling molding give the house that historic bungalow look. The house has many built-ins, which add to the house's character: Bookshelves are tucked into the niche of the wall that separates the living room from the study and are added to several bedrooms.

Matching built-in bookshelves are built on either side of the entry from a side porch in to the study, which is surmounted by a low broad arch, which portrays a beautiful painting of a peacock done by local artist Roch Babin.

Continuing with the theme of "local character", a later resident was reputedly the family who owned the La Prensa newspaper. I am assuming that they were responsible for the renovation of the house's central ballroom in stucco with niches for sculpture or candles and for the two Mexican tile artworks embedded in the walls.

614 East Park History with Images

Greetings!

614 East Park Wow. Talk about an impressive front porch!

I am committed to sending you my listings before they go to MLS so you and those you care about have first dibs on these homes.

I would much rather work with someone who "gets" these vintage homes and neighborhoods than with someone who calls from an ad.

That's where you come in... You like neat old homes, so I am counting on you to forward this on to others who are into front porches, hardwood floors and centrally-located neighborhoods.

So... who comes to mind for this rambling, happy Craftsman Bungalow? Give us a call!

Some Wonderful Memories

Dining Room
Dining Room

The current owner, Diane Hegland, shares her favorite memories of 614 East Park Street.

  • I love living on Park Ave. when I first moved here, I would come home from work, sit on a rocking chair on the front porch and think "I love my house". I did this daily for a long long time.
  • It was such a pleasure driving to & from work, only 5 minutes away! This is such an eclectic neighborhood, the architecture, the people, the restaurants, it's absolutely wonderful!
  • The Riverwalk is being extended & the Pearl Brewery is almost complete, both within walking distance.
  • Since my house is centrally located, it has become a meeting place among my friends. Every year during Fiesta, we meet at the house and then walk to our seats near Maverick Park for the Night Parade. We also meet at the house when we have tickets to the Majestic or Cameo Theaters. Anytime there is a group of us getting together, this is the place to meet!
  • It's a great house for entertaining, plenty of room, both indoors & out.
  • My grandkids love coming to grandma's house. They like visiting Brackenridge Park, and we bought memberships to the Zoo, and the Witte Museum. The house is so large, there is lots of room to run & play. Every Christmas the grandkids & I would put up four trees! One Christmas Santa brought the kids Plasma Cars, they drove from the library through the living room, hallway, kitchen, dining room and back again. In the summer we would have picnics in the backyard, where there is room for pinatas, barbecues & games. The grandkids also loved going swimming at nearby San Pedro Springs.
  • I love the fact that I can get anywhere fast. All of the major freeways are just minutes away. So whether you are heading to Sea World, Fiesta Texas, Brooks City Base, the Forum or the Quarry, it's just a short drive away.

Please don't hesitate to respond to this email or call me or my team if you or someone you know might be interested in this home.

Grand Moorish Revival Home in Historic Tobin Hill

Historic Tobin Hill 4-3 Moorish Revival
A sneak peek before everyone else!
Historically and Architecturally Significant San Antonio Vintage Homes

Entryway

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

A short drive down East Craig Street will take you by a house whose exterior is designed in whimsical Moorish Revival style. Underneath the shade of tall trees is nestled a three-story house, whose roofline and other parapet walls echo the iconic convex and concave curves of the Alamo.

The striking front entry, which stands out from the face of the building, welcomes you to enter through an unusual, deep arch in the shape of a spade. Faux vigas, the rafters that appear to extend through the wall to the exterior at the second story, are added to enhance the Spanish rustic look; as well as the ramada, a trellis on the porch above, usually made from rough branches.

However, that rustic Moorish look is transformed once you enter the house. The dark wood beams in the ceiling and heavy wood trim and paneling found throughout the first floor might appear to be a continuation of the Spanish theme.

The residence at 216 East Craig proclaims a "Tale of Two Houses": once a romantic Victorian built in 1912; later renovated in thick stucco to create the illusion of a Moorish palace. Decorative Spanish iron grills cover windows with diamond-pane lights, typically seen in King William and neighborhoods with turn-of-the century houses.

On the sides and rear of the house you can still see the old wood clapboard siding and the tell-tale Victorian gabled roofs with decorative half-timbering just under the eaves. The plan of the house is essentially a square, with wrap-around porches on two of the three stories. The upper floors have walls placed at an angle to the square, which open up the space of the bedrooms, a detail often seen in late Victorian residential design.

I believe the house on Craig Street is formerly a Victorian Stick style, due to the added lines of woodwork under the gabled roofs and the woodwork on the interior, especially the built-for-the-house buffet in the dining room. Inside the house, you will see several fabulous turn-of-the century chandeliers, push-button light switches, and an original claw-foot bathtub.

The outdoor porch was almost as important as the indoor living spaces, since in the hot Texas weather, the family would spend a good deal of time out there. Windows were placed to capture prevailing breezes, a lost art in modern construction. And, this house once had sleeping porches wrapping all the way around the house on the second floor.

Climbing up to the third floor, you will find a private den or game room, reserved for the children and more familial guests, which is also a typical feature of the large, rambling Victorian house. The house harbors several mysterious nooks and crannies, due to the additions and renovations made to the house over the years.

Tobin Hill 3-2 Spanish Colonial Revival
A sneak peek before everyone else!
Historically and Architecturally Significant San Antonio Vintage Homes

Mudejar-style Painted Panel Doors

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

231 E. Woodlawn Ave., a Spanish Colonial Revival style home started its life in 1920 as a duplex in the Tobin Hill neighborhood. Although the duplex has now been united into a single-family house, its design still echoes its former life as a house for two, in an almost poetic manner.

Two bays with Palladian-style windows project forward from the inset entry. The entry is accessed through two gorgeous Mudejar-style painted panel doors (yes, authentic) that the owner found at an antique store in Morocco.

Once inside the spacious entry hall, you can choose between two paths: Living room or kitchen. These two rooms have been joined spatially via two roughly cut arches that will stir a kid's imagination. Check out the secret red room in the back.

The thick cement stucco walls, red tile roof, and Hacienda-style roof over the side patio give the house its Spanish Colonial character. Also, the remnant of the thick wainscot-height molding and concrete floor in the master bedroom, as well as the rough ceiling molding, and plain-Jane window frames remind us of a more rustic, Mexican home. Light and air literally flows through the house via numerous French doors, divided light windows and hinged transom windows.

In keeping with the theme of "dupl-icity", the house exhibits a second character; that of a 21st-century Bohemian artist's pad. Painterly contrasting colors highlight wall planes and make each room a separate environment, and a few spaces break the rectangular mold, such as the master-bedroom alcove and red room beyond. No wonder that this house was at one time home to one of San Antonio's most famous artists, Robert Tatum, director of Contemporary Art Month each July. In fact, rumor has it that one of his painting lies under the bright blue paint of the entry hall.

Greetings!

I love visiting Dean & Heidi in their breezy home right on the border of Monte Vista. The doors and windows are always flung open- no AC or heater on. Maybe it's the owners' laid-back nature at work, but I always feel comfortable and at peace in this eccentric & inspiring gem of a home.

Just in case you weren't paying attention... your interest in San Antonio architecture has earned you a view of my new listings before Realtors, before MLS and frequently even before the sign goes up (no sign on this one yet!).

Perhaps you aren't currently shopping for a new home, but in the next 18 hours, chances are you will run into someone who is thinking about buying or selling. If it's someone you care about, get permission to share their name and number with us. These referrals are what keep us thriving and we appreciate your support.

Some Wonderful Memories

Excellent Patio
Excellent Patio

Dean & Heidi, the current owners, share their memories from living in their Home on Woodlawn:

  • La Fonda on Main is a short, pleasant walk, with delicious food and friendly staff (and a short, contented walk home if there were margaritas!)
  • We loved living in a historic part of San Antonio, close to the cultural heartbeat of the city.
  • The neighborhood public school is Hawthorne Academy, one of the best schools in San Antonio.
  • There are several great parks, including Brackenridge Park and the Landa Library playground. The San Antonio Zoo is a few minutes by bike.
  • The post office is right across the street, so there's no forgetting to mail important parcels.
  • El Milagrito restaurant is just down the street - great place for Saturday/Sunday brunch. Or a little further down N. St. Mary's, you can enjoy Greek food at Demo's. It is a very diverse and well educated community.
  • Our neighbor is a piano teacher and we can sometimes hear her playing if we are sitting out on the side porch on Saturday afternoons.
  • Feeling the energy and love we have put into the house, relaxing now that we have finished all our hard work.
  • Enjoying the high ceilings, original hardwood floors and many windows
  • The sense of San Antonio history that comes with living in an older home
  • The endearing little remnants of the transformations that the house has gone through from duplex to single family
  • Coming back to the house after a long trip abroad, adding things from around the world, such as the front doors from Morocco and the tiles from Mexico
  • The memory of bringing our newborn son home from the hospital (right down the street!), watching him achieve all his milestones in this house
  • Sitting on the back deck watching our kids play in the back yard
  • Relaxing on one of the three or four outdoor settings and reading a good book.
  • Walking over to Justin's Ice Cream for a little treat.
  • Comfortable family get-togethers in the open kitchen-dining area
  • Random gifts of scrumptious food from our next door neighbor, who is a chef and owner at a neighborhood cafe
