Terra Cotta Tile Mosaic

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

The Frida Kahlo light switch plate in the kitchen says it all. Bright and earthy Mexican colors; imagery of an luscious tropical garden with monkey; Frida standing in the foreground in a gorgeous old-fashioned dress, flower-ornamented hair piled on top of her head.....waiting.

The Rosewood property lacks the tropical garden, however the whimsical curves of the chimney, arches and wall planes extending from the house give it a picturesque quality that beckons Frida to emerge from the bright zinnia-orange entry court.

To be a part of the story, you must enter through the whitewashed walls and sky blue lined arches that lead into the entry court. Before you enter, you are greeted by a Mexican tile plaque over the entry way that states "Bienvenidos: Mi casa es su casa" (Welcome: My house is your house"). The interior is just as fun and inviting.

In the living area, a prominent painted-block fireplace with a chunky wood mantle recalls heavy Spanish colonial furniture, and it is set off by a terra cotta, rust and yellow tile mosaic at its base. The fireplace is complimented by windows on each side with attractive wood shutters.

The arches on the exterior of the house are carried inside to a few interior details. Notice the telephone niche in the dining room (requisite in a 1920s house), which is framed by a semi-circular arch. The Spanish-style arches are highlighted in yellow over the kitchen sink and cabinets.

The house is also ornamented with other magical curiosities, mostly with curving plant-inspired motifs. Check out the antique floral design of the pewter light switch plate in the dining area; the curly-q cut-out design under the kitchen shelves; the cut-out panels of the front bathroom cabinets; and a very curious circular wall-plate whose purpose I could not define.

The Rosewood house resides on a small corner lot within a quaint neighborhood just off Fredericksburg Road. This neighborhood is well known for the charm of its small, but imaginatively designed houses, each exuding a nostalgic re-creation of another country or time period. These houses and the people who lovingly take care of them, together, create a real feeling of community.

Greetings!

1618, Rosewood AvenueExcellent! I love San Antonio because you can still find a substantial vintage home for less than $75,000.

Who is the first person who comes to mind who would be a good steward for this great home over near Monticello Park? They will thank you for forwarding this on to them. Houses like these go fast...

Meanwhile, I hope you take a moment to check out the rest of the photos.

Some Wonderful Memories

Multi-level Wood Deck

The current owner, Onashka, shares favorite memories of 1618, W. Rosewood Avenue.

  • The location is fantastic. I was really "10 minutes" from everything!
  • I spent many wonderful evening walking around Woodlawn park as well as swimming there in the summers.
  • El Rafas has wonderful breakfast tacos. I would walk there on Saturday mornings to "eat, meet and greet" with friends. I also enjoyed the fancy Jim's Restaurant on Hildebrand for dinner.
  • The Mexican popsicles around the corner on Fredericksburg Road, are WONDERFUL. You must try the mango...very inexpensive as well.

I can tell you are already in love with this neat house. We understand and look forward to hearing from you.

Castle Hills 3-2 Ranch

Castle Hills 3-2 Ranch
A sneak peek before everyone else!

Stain glass Panel

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

The house at 100, Trillium Lane hugs the hill it sits on with a low, extended profile and is shaded by a beautiful canopy of native Texas trees. It is a 1963 modern Ranch Style home with a light, minimalist aesthetic.

The exterior walls are constructed with a cream-colored brick laid in an irregular relief pattern, accompanied by the straight repeating lines of white-painted wood siding. The profile of the gabled roofs is low enough that one does not see their shingled surface from the street.

By the 1960s, steel and glass skyscraper and slick, transparent public buildings, in the so-called International Style, were cropping up all over American cities. Those who were ready to relinquish the compartmentalized spaces of the bungalow or old-fashioned look of the stately Neoclassical home welcomed the clean lines and open spaces of both International Style and Ranch Style residences.

One enters the house on Trillium through a charming, xeriscape courtyard and a door ornamented with a glowing stained glass panel. The entry gives way to a spacious living area with large windows, which spans one-half of the length of the house. In typical Ranch fashion the more familial spaces of the house are tucked behind the living room and face the back yard. The entryway also leads directly to the den, which has its original, stained wood paneling and attached ceiling beams.

Set in contrast to the darker tone of the paneling, is the white-painted fireplace and bench, designed with the same brick pattern of the house's exterior. The wood paneling extends down the walls into the kitchen with pantry and cabinet doors matching its smooth, minimalist aesthetic. This 60s modernist look is carried through into the bedrooms with the folding closet panels and wood panel doors.

Back in the den, French doors open to the back patio and yard. Most likely, these were originally Arcadia sliding glass doors, which would have provided a direct and transparent view into the outdoor space. The patio floor has a sweeping profile, designed to match the curving shape of the fence beyond; and its cover is upheld by a typical 1960s detail: a thin steel frame with a repeating "S" motif welded in between.

100 Trillium History with Images

Greetings!

100, Trillium LaneI spent a great deal of time at my friends' homes in Castle Hills as a kid. I enjoyed the big yards and the architecture was new to me. Many were ranch-style homes, but they had more style and class than the ranch-style homes from the other neighborhoods I became familiar with over the years.

Castle Hills is secretly one of my favorite neighborhoods. The streets are quiet. The homes are well-tended and the yards are manicured. This is a great place to live and it's firmly inside the loop. And there's great Thai food.

Who's the next person you can think of who would love to live in a great 3-2 in Castle Hills at a smashing price? (See all the other homes available in Castle Hills & their much higher price tags) I bet your friend would appreciate your forwarding this information before the whole world hears about it. :-)

Or, please feel comfortable giving us a call. We would love to answer your questions about this immaculate home or about home-buying in San Antonio in general.

Terrell Heights 3-2 + office on Giant Lot - AHISD

Terrell Heights 3-2 Minimal Traditional A sneak peek before everyone else!
Historically and Architecturally Significant San Antonio Vintage Homes

Switch Plate

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

The appeal of 139, Blakeley Drive, a country-ranch re-do of a former 1954 Minimal Traditional style house can be seen in its sweet, homespun details. The covered porch that extends the length of the house is an addition intended to update a former boxy exterior.

The Texas Lonestar is carved into wood panels that embellish each porch post and one large star ornaments the stained glass window of the hardwood entry door. The wood-frame window screens accent the house in a bright, cheery gladiola hue.

The Minimal Traditional house is a type that proliferated during the Depression era in the United States and shortly after the war. Typically its boxy form had few projections, little ornamentation, and a low-pitched roof with close-set eaves.

The house's plan was designed with the popular Ranch-Style layout in mind, with spaces arranged along one long axis facing the street and an attached garage, covered by a cross-gable to pronounce its presence.

Bringing the garage to the front of the house was a cultural statement at the time, celebrating ownership of the increasingly-affordable automobile. A multi-level wood deck extends out behind the house and overlooks and enormous wooded backyard.

A long, window-decked living room occupies the garage end of the axis, and its back wall divides the living area from the kitchen; bedrooms follow the long axis from the living area; a typical Ranch spatial feature.

A separate dining area opens into the living space, where an almost Victorian stained-glass lamp hangs from the ceiling fan, casting beautiful shadows. It is complemented by an pewter switch plate.

The bright yellow kitchen glows like a sunny box next to the more subtle, subdued hues of the dining area. Here true vintage 1950s materials are preserved in the cabinetry, the corner sink and window design, and the yellow flower wallpaper and white floral ceiling tiles. Don't miss the charming variety of teapot drawer and door pulls!

Homage to the 1950s can also be seen in the front bathroom with its rose-pink and green tile lining the walls and its old-fashioned pedestal sink. The back bathroom is renovated to imitate a 19th-century "western-style" look. A dark wood cabinet supports an old-fashioned sink with antique-looking fixtures. Behind the sink are decorative tiles, a western/floral print wallpaper and an antique wood mirror to match the cabinet below.

139 Blakeley History with Images

Greetings!

139, Blakeley DriveThe stats speak for themselves. Here's a 3-2 home in Alamo Heights School District located in San Antonio city limits (SA taxes!) and on a lot that seems to be almost an acre. Oh yeah, it only runs $219,900.

We are pre-MLS, so there is a sliver of time while your friends, family or other folks you care about, can see it before the rest of the world. So, who comes to mind? Who wants great schools, room to roam and an incredible price?

My clients proactively ordered an inspection and contractor to knock out the issues that would come up during the buyer inspection. That is extremely cool... Effectively, they've taken out the guess work so your friends can feel confident they know what a great home they are walking in to.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Joe Barfield

Walkable Neighborhood

Walkscore TileTerrell Heights is a charming neighborhood located to the south of Alamo Heights. It's a quick hop to downtown, Trinity University, University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Central Market, Whole Foods, Mc Nay Art Museum, Witte Museum and the Quarry Mall are all located in close proximity.

Some Wonderful Memories

Multi-level Wood Deck
Multi-level Wood Deck

The current owners, Hallie and Christopher, share their favorite memories of 139, Blakeley Drive.

  • WALKING to our favorite restaurant- "Tong's Thai"on Austin Hwy. romantic walk around corner, on Friday evenings to have glass of plum wine on Tong's outside deck and unwind after work week with family, eating favorite dish, and listening to the live music.
  • Sitting on front porch in rocking chairs on Saturday and Sunday mornings, enjoying coffee, with newspaper.
  • Annual Halloween trick-or-treat parties with friends in Terrell Heights... rotating houses each year "hosting" kids Halloween party, and at dark going trick-or-treating in neighborhood with large group of Terrell Heights families.
  • Playing with young daughter and dogs in huge backyard in the summer with blow up pool, sprinkler, and swing set on hot summer days.
  • Enjoying family in backyard on cool fall days on back deck with hot chocolate, and also jumping with daughter on trampoline.
  • Eating homemade pancakes on Saturday mornings, in cozy country kitchen that "Dad and daughter" made, to impress "Mom'.
  • Watching our returning red cardinal in backyard every season that we named "Crazy", because he would repeatedly hit the glass on back patio doors with his beak. We think he wanted to move in. "Crazy" came back for about 4 or 5 years.
  • Having fun "painting" exterior of our house (first time) when our child was a toddler, because we were young, and wanted to do it "ourselves". Drinking lots of lemonade, and soda painting in summer.
  • Watching all the revitalization of Austin Hwy. and all of the great businesses pop up the last few years. Ex. Brand new HEB, Supercenter Walmart, Spectrum, and other great necessary stores, and businesses. It still continues to improve... Bun n Barrel is currently being restored.
  • Blakeley is a great quiet, country feeling, hilly street with mature trees, within the best community that a child can be raised in. You have all nearby shops, restaurants, museums, without moving to the country, and without the burbs with big commute. Downtown is just a short trek down broadway. Zoo and parks are nearby, and plenty of churches.
  • Alamo heights ISD- thebest public school in San Antonio!
  • Other great schools in area. University of Incarnate Word, Incarnate Word High School and Trinity University.
  • Blakeley is one street away from Terrell Hills- very expensive properties...
  • Where else can you have a half-acre inside the city? The backyard is very private. We don't see or hear neighbors because of large lot, and mature landscaping.
  • We have always found that people that live on Blakeley are nice and quiet people.

Please don't hesitate to respond to this email or call me or my team if you or someone you know might be interested in this home.
