Architectural Analysis | By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D. The appeal of 139, Blakeley Drive, a country-ranch re-do of a former 1954 Minimal Traditional style house can be seen in its sweet, homespun details. The covered porch that extends the length of the house is an addition intended to update a former boxy exterior. The Texas Lonestar is carved into wood panels that embellish each porch post and one large star ornaments the stained glass window of the hardwood entry door. The wood-frame window screens accent the house in a bright, cheery gladiola hue. The Minimal Traditional house is a type that proliferated during the Depression era in the United States and shortly after the war. Typically its boxy form had few projections, little ornamentation, and a low-pitched roof with close-set eaves. The house's plan was designed with the popular Ranch-Style layout in mind, with spaces arranged along one long axis facing the street and an attached garage, covered by a cross-gable to pronounce its presence. Bringing the garage to the front of the house was a cultural statement at the time, celebrating ownership of the increasingly-affordable automobile. A multi-level wood deck extends out behind the house and overlooks and enormous wooded backyard. A long, window-decked living room occupies the garage end of the axis, and its back wall divides the living area from the kitchen; bedrooms follow the long axis from the living area; a typical Ranch spatial feature. A separate dining area opens into the living space, where an almost Victorian stained-glass lamp hangs from the ceiling fan, casting beautiful shadows. It is complemented by an pewter switch plate. The bright yellow kitchen glows like a sunny box next to the more subtle, subdued hues of the dining area. Here true vintage 1950s materials are preserved in the cabinetry, the corner sink and window design, and the yellow flower wallpaper and white floral ceiling tiles. Don't miss the charming variety of teapot drawer and door pulls! Homage to the 1950s can also be seen in the front bathroom with its rose-pink and green tile lining the walls and its old-fashioned pedestal sink. The back bathroom is renovated to imitate a 19th-century "western-style" look. A dark wood cabinet supports an old-fashioned sink with antique-looking fixtures. Behind the sink are decorative tiles, a western/floral print wallpaper and an antique wood mirror to match the cabinet below. | | |

| Greetings! The stats speak for themselves. Here's a 3-2 home in Alamo Heights School District located in San Antonio city limits (SA taxes!) and on a lot that seems to be almost an acre. Oh yeah, it only runs $219,900. We are pre-MLS, so there is a sliver of time while your friends, family or other folks you care about, can see it before the rest of the world. So, who comes to mind? Who wants great schools, room to roam and an incredible price?
My clients proactively ordered an inspection and contractor to knock out the issues that would come up during the buyer inspection. That is extremely cool... Effectively, they've taken out the guess work so your friends can feel confident they know what a great home they are walking in to. I look forward to hearing from you, Joe Barfield 210-745-0892 The Joe Barfield Group of Keller Williams

Some Wonderful Memories |
Multi-level Wood Deck
The current owners, Hallie and Christopher, share their favorite memories of 139, Blakeley Drive. - WALKING to our favorite restaurant- "Tong's Thai"on Austin Hwy. romantic walk around corner, on Friday evenings to have glass of plum wine on Tong's outside deck and unwind after work week with family, eating favorite dish, and listening to the live music.
- Sitting on front porch in rocking chairs on Saturday and Sunday mornings, enjoying coffee, with newspaper.
- Annual Halloween trick-or-treat parties with friends in Terrell Heights... rotating houses each year "hosting" kids Halloween party, and at dark going trick-or-treating in neighborhood with large group of Terrell Heights families.
- Playing with young daughter and dogs in huge backyard in the summer with blow up pool, sprinkler, and swing set on hot summer days.
- Enjoying family in backyard on cool fall days on back deck with hot chocolate, and also jumping with daughter on trampoline.
- Eating homemade pancakes on Saturday mornings, in cozy country kitchen that "Dad and daughter" made, to impress "Mom'.
- Watching our returning red cardinal in backyard every season that we named "Crazy", because he would repeatedly hit the glass on back patio doors with his beak. We think he wanted to move in. "Crazy" came back for about 4 or 5 years.
- Having fun "painting" exterior of our house (first time) when our child was a toddler, because we were young, and wanted to do it "ourselves". Drinking lots of lemonade, and soda painting in summer.
- Watching all the revitalization of Austin Hwy. and all of the great businesses pop up the last few years. Ex. Brand new HEB, Supercenter Walmart, Spectrum, and other great necessary stores, and businesses. It still continues to improve... Bun n Barrel is currently being restored.
- Blakeley is a great quiet, country feeling, hilly street with mature trees, within the best community that a child can be raised in. You have all nearby shops, restaurants, museums, without moving to the country, and without the burbs with big commute. Downtown is just a short trek down broadway. Zoo and parks are nearby, and plenty of churches.
- Alamo heights ISD- thebest public school in San Antonio!
- Other great schools in area. University of Incarnate Word, Incarnate Word High School and Trinity University.
- Blakeley is one street away from Terrell Hills- very expensive properties...
- Where else can you have a half-acre inside the city? The backyard is very private. We don't see or hear neighbors because of large lot, and mature landscaping.
- We have always found that people that live on Blakeley are nice and quiet people.
