Exposed-aggregate Concrete Path

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

As you pull into the drive in front of 7062 McCullough, dark green bushes and hot pink Crape Myrtle spring out of triangular brick-lined slots that guide you to a parking space. The soft, grey-brown brick contemporary house is sheltered from the hot Texas sun by a profusion of greenery.

The exposed-aggregate concrete path, lined with soft brown bricks, winds through the rampant greenery of the garden with its bright accents of white, golden-orange and purple. The garden and house are organized along a longitudinal axis, extending deeply from the street.

The zen-like calmness of the garden is extended into the house itself, and perhaps is a reflection of the original designer's persona. This designer, the mother of the present owner, designed the property as a retirement home capable of entertaining large groups of friends.

Her love of gardening and architecture can be seen clearly in the present house built in 1981; in its simple, modern palette of architectural forms and materials.

The house is a Garden Home, a detached version of the Patio Home, a category that came into existence in the 1970s. Patio homes are usually one-story and share at least one side wall with the neighboring home. Garden real estate is a niche market in San Antonio, which has appeal for those seeking a home with an established garden.

This Garden Home is a unique design that extends the definition of living space to the exterior garden. The exterior, with its various shaded seating areas and wisteria arbor, is shaped into outdoor rooms that are enclosed and private, like an architectural interior.

The house's interior and the garden are utterly quiet and tranquil, despite the proximity to a busy thoroughfare. The closets and bathrooms are placed on the street side of the house, acting as a buffer for the interior. It also does not share exterior walls with the neighboring homes.

The entry into the house leads directly on axis to an atrium filled with light; this atrium, filled with exuberant greenery, illuminates the dining area, whose entrance is marked by columns painted with ivy.

Large windows, patio doors and corner windows peek from every room in the house into the exterior garden. Natural materials and garden imagery cover the walls of the bathrooms and kitchen. A den with broad glass opens to the garden beyond.

7062 McCullough History with Images

Greetings!

7062 McCulloughHere's an startlingly peaceful contemporary home in East Shearer Hills. The wisteria, the ground cover and the home's layout, not to mention the patio, all conspire to put me at ease. What a great home to come home to!

Perhaps you know someone looking for a uniquely peaceful home inside the loop who will be interested in 7062 McCullough. We haven't put the sign up, nor have we put it on MLS, so they have the brief sliver of time before the whole world clamors for this beauty.
Enjoy!

Some Wonderful Memories

The current owners, Pleas and Mary Martha, share their favorite memories of 7062, McCullough Ave:

  • The main thing I love about the house is the peace. The house is designed so that virtually no urban or traffic noise intrudes. It's difficult to believe that you are inside a major American city, five to ten minutes from just about everything.
  • A lot of privacy and security like living in a retreat in the middle of the city. Always look forward to coming home after a busy day to a quiet retreat surrounded by nature.
  • You could not ask for a better location. Easy access to 281. Therefore 15 minutes from downtown or the airport. And North Star Mall.
  • The Olmos Basin Golf Course is also right across the street.
  • I have walked to the Quarry Shopping Center many times. There are 2 routes through the golf course. Takes about 15-20 minutes to walk.
  • On San Pedro which is 3 blocks to the west there is an HEB, cleaners, restaurants, etc.
  • Short distance to Whole Foods in the Quarry and to Central Market HEB. I meet people frequently at Whole Foods.
  • Then there is the Olmos Park Shopping Center is about 1.5 miles South. I have walked to there as well. There are restaurants, hardware store, and many other neighborhood services. Schnabels is a friendly old time hardware store.
  • There is a recently-constructed walking path across the street. Many quiet streets for walking. Basin especially is a favorite for walkers in the neighborhood.
  • The McCullough Bus stops right across the street.
  • Looking out the bedroom every morning and watching the squirrels play in the oak tree. This house is designed so that you view the garden from every room.
  • Watching the flowers bloom in early spring.
  • Morning tea on the deck basking in the early morning light on the garden. The patio has 3 seating areas for enjoying morning tea.
  • Asian Jasmine is planted all along the front end of the house and when it blooms in the spring the fragrance comes in through the bathroom windows.
  • Late night walks on the Olmos Basin golf course with our coon dog mix.
  • The jungle in the atrium is fourteen years old providing plant filtered light to the dinning room and my home office.
  • Many dinner parties in our dining area that looks onto the atrium. We have had parties with over 100 people in attendance. I remember a party with over 130 people. A half dozen conversation groups - a symphony of ideas and gentle laughter.
  • Video recording music and conservation on the deck and at various places in the garden.
  • I cook at home and taught Healthy Cooking in our spacious kitchen for years.
  • Wonderful neighbors on either side. Ida Kenny and her husband began the development of these garden homes in 1980 with the idea that people would enjoy low maintenance living without yards.
  • You could not ask for a better location. And Yes it is unique and beautiful like a work of art.
