Northwood 4-3 Ranch Modern
A sneak peek before everyone else!
Historically and Architecturally Significant San Antonio Vintage Homes

Horizontal Brickwork

Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, PhD

Remember Laura and Rob Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke Show? I can just see Rob walking down the sidewalk of this house at 426 Rockhill Drive with his brief case in hand, while Laura waves goodbye from the front porch.

This sleek 1955 ranch-modern inside the loop in San Antonio epitomizes the post-World War II idealized American home. The contemporary ranch style home was often the chosen setting for many television series in the early 1960s, like The Brady Bunch and Bewitched.

After World War II, the style of the ideal American home changed pretty dramatically. Popular home magazines no longer displayed picturesque bungalows or stately Neoclassical homes. The "Dream House of the Future" had clean lines, little ornamentation, and all of the latest modern appliances for the kitchen and laundry. These contemporary homes offered a new lifestyle with spacious living areas and large plate glass windows connecting the interior of the house with "nature": usually an expansive, carefully landscaped and groomed yard.

Our house on Rockhill Drive is enclosed in a slick white brick envelope with a low, almost horizontal gable hovering over the entire house. The horizontal line of a secondary flat roof projects in front of the house and over the projecting dining area and open-air carport. The living room opens from a narrow, cozy entry with a brick planter into a spacious, well-lit room bearing the same white brick as the exterior envelope. The fireplace mantle, which repeats again in the den, is simply an extension of horizontal brickwork. The exposed wood beams of the ceiling follow the low, horizontal lines of the gabled roof.

Typical of 1955 is the carved wood and glass paneling of the kitchen cabinets and, of course, the powder pink tile of the hallway bathroom. Other period details worthy of note are the glass jalousie windows and the matching designer cabinetry-closets seen in the den and bedrooms. The arrangement is a nicely proportioned system of wood panels that are hinged and or slide, and the cabinet drawers have this late 50's/early 60's "George Jetson" kind of angle to their face. The rooms to the north side of the house are a later addition.

Greetings!

Here's one for those who enjoy Mid-Century Modern homes. I love driving Northwood and checking out the sleek lines of these wing-shaped 50's looking homes. Groovy baby... stir me a pitcher of martinis!

Really, Northwood offers a peaceful neighborhood with award-winning schools, wide boulevards and a canopy of pecan and oak trees. Two blocks off of Broadway and you feel that you are out in the country with wide open spaces (and cool houses!)

426 Rockhill stands waiting and ready for someone with vision and romance.

Share it wisely with others who might appreciate it. If they are interested, please pass on our number: 733-1928.

Tobin Hill 3-2 Spanish Colonial Revival
A sneak peek before everyone else!
Historically and Architecturally Significant San Antonio Vintage Homes
    1-

    Mudejar-style Painted Panel Doors

    Architectural Analysis

By: Architectural Historian Shelley Roff, Ph.D.

231 E. Woodlawn Ave., a Spanish Colonial Revival style home started its life in 1920 as a duplex in the Tobin Hill neighborhood. Although the duplex has now been united into a single-family house, its design still echoes its former life as a house for two, in an almost poetic manner.

Two bays with Palladian-style windows project forward from the inset entry. The entry is accessed through two gorgeous Mudejar-style painted panel doors (yes, authentic) that the owner found at an antique store in Morocco.

Once inside the spacious entry hall, you can choose between two paths: Living room or kitchen. These two rooms have been joined spatially via two roughly cut arches that will stir a kid's imagination. Check out the secret red room in the back.

The thick cement stucco walls, red tile roof, and Hacienda-style roof over the side patio give the house its Spanish Colonial character. Also, the remnant of the thick wainscot-height molding and concrete floor in the master bedroom, as well as the rough ceiling molding, and plain-Jane window frames remind us of a more rustic, Mexican home. Light and air literally flows through the house via numerous French doors, divided light windows and hinged transom windows.

In keeping with the theme of "dupl-icity", the house exhibits a second character; that of a 21st-century Bohemian artist's pad. Painterly contrasting colors highlight wall planes and make each room a separate environment, and a few spaces break the rectangular mold, such as the master-bedroom alcove and red room beyond. No wonder that this house was at one time home to one of San Antonio's most famous artists, Robert Tatum, director of Contemporary Art Month each July. In fact, rumor has it that one of his painting lies under the bright blue paint of the entry hall.

    Greetings!

I love visiting Dean & Heidi in their breezy home right on the border of Monte Vista. The doors and windows are always flung open- no AC or heater on. Maybe it's the owners' laid-back nature at work, but I always feel comfortable and at peace in this eccentric & inspiring gem of a home.

Just in case you weren't paying attention... your interest in San Antonio architecture has earned you a view of my new listings before Realtors, before MLS and frequently even before the sign goes up (no sign on this one yet!).

Perhaps you aren't currently shopping for a new home, but in the next 18 hours, chances are you will run into someone who is thinking about buying or selling. If it's someone you care about, get permission to share their name and number with us. These referrals are what keep us thriving and we appreciate your support.

    Fair 'nuff?

    Some Wonderful Memories

    Excellent Patio
    Excellent Patio

Dean & Heidi, the current owners, share their memories from living in their Home on Woodlawn:

    • La Fonda on Main is a short, pleasant walk, with delicious food and friendly staff (and a short, contented walk home if there were margaritas!)
    • We loved living in a historic part of San Antonio, close to the cultural heartbeat of the city.
    • The neighborhood public school is Hawthorne Academy, one of the best schools in San Antonio.
    • There are several great parks, including Brackenridge Park and the Landa Library playground. The San Antonio Zoo is a few minutes by bike.
    • The post office is right across the street, so there's no forgetting to mail important parcels.
    • El Milagrito restaurant is just down the street - great place for Saturday/Sunday brunch. Or a little further down N. St. Mary's, you can enjoy Greek food at Demo's. It is a very diverse and well educated community.
    • Our neighbor is a piano teacher and we can sometimes hear her playing if we are sitting out on the side porch on Saturday afternoons.
    • Feeling the energy and love we have put into the house, relaxing now that we have finished all our hard work.
    • Enjoying the high ceilings, original hardwood floors and many windows
    • The sense of San Antonio history that comes with living in an older home
    • The endearing little remnants of the transformations that the house has gone through from duplex to single family
    • Coming back to the house after a long trip abroad, adding things from around the world, such as the front doors from Morocco and the tiles from Mexico
    • The memory of bringing our newborn son home from the hospital (right down the street!), watching him achieve all his milestones in this house
    • Sitting on the back deck watching our kids play in the back yard
    • Relaxing on one of the three or four outdoor settings and reading a good book.
    • Walking over to Justin's Ice Cream for a little treat.
    • Comfortable family get-togethers in the open kitchen-dining area
    • Random gifts of scrumptious food from our next door neighbor, who is a chef and owner at a neighborhood cafe
